Business Owner vs. Independent Contractor
So many people want a "work at home data entry job".
Better, though, not to limit yourself. Rather than working for just
one company or individual from home [in your data entry "job"] ...
why not start your own data entry home business. As an independent
contractor OR a business owner:
- You are self-employed
- In the United States, you must pay income taxes
at the end of the year and you can deduct business
expenses. (Similar laws may apply in other
countries. You should thoroughly understand the laws
regarding independent contractor status where you
live.)
- You have to provide the supplies and equipment
necessary to perform the work
- You have to have or acquire the skills needed to
perform the work
- You have to manage the paperwork, filing,
accounting and other administrative tasks
A big disadvantage to a work at home data entry "job" - or being
an independent contractor for one company or individual - is that
they will only provide work when they have it available and they
set your rate of pay.
In addition, you are generally only performing one
type of service - such as data entry. It's almost like
having all of your eggs in one basket ... when the
basket is empty, you have to wait for someone to fill it
up again. In the meantime, you've got nothing.
The key to making more money, more
consistently, is to have a variety of customers.
In your own home business, you should develop a strong base of
clients. You might do data entry three or four times a year for a
data processing firm; transcription for a marketing survey company
as needed; a one-time word processing project for a local real
estate agent; miscellaneous projects from
elance.com,
where you begin to develop a good reputation ...
As your business grows, you continue to gain new clients. As
well, you get referrals from past clients and your list of
references is quite impressive. If you choose to learn a new skill,
or software program, or niche within a specific industry ... you now
know how to market yourself to new customers and you have an
expansive database of past customers to help spread the word.
In your Data Entry Home Business, you have the
opportunity to earn a lot more money, enjoy a larger
variety of projects, often provide a price quote rather
than being told what you're worth, work with local
businesses, earn a professional reputation, acquire
excellent business references, and set your own
schedule.
