eBook Formats: PDF vs. EXE
PDF Format
Simply use MS Word or your preferred
word processing software to create your masterpiece
and convert the completed file into a PDF format.
This can be opened on either a Windows or Mac
environment and viewed using a free software called
Adobe Reader.
 
 There
are a variety of ways to convert your document to
PDF. You can add
Create Adobe PDF as a printer on your
computer, or use their online conversion software.
You can also purchase either the stand alone
Distiller software or the full Acrobat software
program. This is what I use and find extremely
useful beyond just creating secure, professional PDF
documents. Yes, it's an investment. But if you are
in this for the long run ... it will pay for itself
quickly.

Another PDF converter software that I
really like is
BCL Easy PDF. Your readers can
download the free Adobe Reader for viewing and
printing ... but you don't have to invest in the
Acrobat software program to create professional,
secure PDF documents. This program is only $14.95
and will accomplish the basics for you.

EXE Format
I've invested a little too heavily in
executable-type software for my eBooks. As it turns
out, I don't use any of them. This is one of
those expensive lessons I want to spare you from.
The main reasons I don't like them
are 1) the eBook files don't generally open on a Mac
computer so Mac users are eliminated as your
customers. Not good! and 2) any executable file can
pick up and spread viruses. I certainly don't want
to risk passing on a computer virus to my eBook
customers, no matter how
miniscule the possibility.
Maybe there are new EXE products on
the market that solve the above two dilemmas. I
stopped pursuing the matter after blowing a few
hundred dollars on good, quality programs I felt I
couldn't use because of the
reasons above.
After producing several eBooks and
other documents in PDF format both for sale and for
free, I find PDF to serve all of my needs, and the
needs of my customers very effectively.
Though I won't specifically recommend
any EXE products, here is some information about
both formats to help you make an informed decision
for yourself. If you research this subject online,
you will find A LOT of search results for various
HTML or EXE eBook products. However, if you visit
professional websites selling quality eBooks, you
will notice that the majority of them are available
in PDF format.
